Valerie - Thanks for adding in the PG&E costs. That helps to frame expenses. I have heard that the motorized pool sweepers also can use up quite a bit of energy as well. As you say, you have to be a pool person to ultimately appreciate all that comes along with a pool. Thanks for comment!

Ha! I look at a pool like a yacht. They say the 2nd happiest day in a rich man's life is the day he buys his yacht. The happiest is the day he sells it. You really have to want a pool. Additional considerations would be nearby trees that drop their leaves either completely in the fall or all year long like a pine tree. Every November I filled a 55gallon trash bag every night full of mulberry leaves from my neighbor's tree. Just to run the pump added nearly $100 a month to my PG&E bill and my pool wasn't heated, it's gets so hot here it's not needed. Add chemicals, time spent scrubbing down the sides, (or the cost of a service) it's a big commitment. That being said, I miss my pool. I'm a pool person.

Debra - Thanks for reading and the comment. Yes, definitely agree that the more yard there is around the pool, the better. Many buyers simply don't want a back yard full of pool. Thanks!

Thanks for all this great information about pools.

In my area, east of Seattle, pools are not particularly popular. Surprisingly, there is a good strong season where a pool would be fun to enjoy. Our summers are often warm, sunny, and dry. We don't tell too many people that it doesn't rain here all year round!
The value of a pool in the Seattle area depends on the size of the lot and the price range of the home. A pool would have value if the property was an estate property with some land. However, if the pool is the major part of a backyard for a mid-range home, it will detract from the overall value of the home.
